Twitter & Cannabis

It’s no secret to those of us on social media that there are certain restrictions placed on cannabis that don’t apply to other products. Due to the differing legal status of cannabis across the US on a state-by-state basis, there are certain restrictions for cannabis marketing on social media. As a company with several cannabis dispensaries in Colorado, these restrictions can be very annoying!

These restrictions prevent us from communicating things such as the availability of new cannabis products or special offers on customer favorites. They also limit the types of giveaways we can offer to our loyal customers and patients. This is why it’s important to sign up for our email list and SMS list! These direct communications allow us to deliver the best offers, new products, and other updates from Seed & Smith straight to your email inbox or by text message. Make sure you sign up for our newsletter.

Another way you can stay in the loop on our social media is by following us on Twitter!

Twitter is much less stringent than Facebook, and by extension, Instagram. These two platforms limit the type of communications we are able to post; however, Twitter is much less regulated than Facebook or Instagram. As a result, our strategies for cannabis marketing on social media are more effective and we are able to convey information we wouldn’t normally be able to on other social media platforms.

You may have heard of Elon Musk, the founder of popular companies such as Tesla and SpaceX. Recently, Musk started the process to purchase Twitter. Many differing opinions exist on why he is going through with the $44 billion purchase, but Musk claims that he wants to defend Freedom of Speech on the platform, one of the important cornerstones of the American Constitution. This is an interesting development, as like Facebook and Instagram, Twitter is a business with its own terms of service and thus reserves the right to moderate any communications on the platform that could be deemed dangerous or otherwise in violation of its terms of service. Whether or not Musk follows through on his claims is yet to be seen, but for now, he maintains his wish to allow Twitter users to speak their mind, whatever that may be. This issue of Freedom of Speech was previously publicized after ex-President Donald Trump had his personal Twitter account banned from the platform.

Because Twitter has become an important channel of discourse and information relating to politics, finance, and other important topics of society, there is a spotlight on the acquisition. Musk is a polarizing figure, with many staunch supporters and fierce detractors, and as such, there has been a lot of discussion about the future of the social media platform.

Let’s get back to cannabis. What does this mean for dispensaries and the restrictions related to cannabis marketing on social media? Hopefully, Twitter maintains its lax policies towards content around cannabis. Best case scenario, the situation improves and Twitter becomes a significant platform for cannabis customers, patients, and businesses to come together and have unrestricted lines of communication.

Cannabis marketing is much more lenient and effective on Twitter than on other platforms. Make sure you follow us on Twitter!
